AI Overviews now appear on most Google searches, but few people click
Reports say AI Overviews now show on about 80 percent of Google searches, while one small study found a click rate under 1 percent. What business owners should do.
What happened
Search Engine Roundtable's November 2026 report says Google's AI Overviews now appear on about 80 percent of searches, including searches with typos. Google announced changes to the links shown inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, but has said it will not share click data for them. One small study reported a click through rate of just 0.9 percent for links in these AI answers.
Why it matters
For many searches, the buyer now reads Google's summary before they see any website. If your business is not named or linked in that summary, ranking on page one is worth less than it used to be. The study was small, so treat the exact number with care, but the direction is clear.
What to do
- Search your three most important services and note whether your business appears in the AI Overview.
- Add clear facts to your pages that an AI summary can quote: prices, locations, years of experience, results.
- Measure leads and enquiries, not only rankings, when you judge your SEO.
